Researchers have found and described a brand new species of alligator lizard of the Abronia genus from the Northern Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. The reptile differs from different lizards within the Abronia genus in that it lacks “protuberant or spine-like supra-auricular scales, lack of protuberant or casque-like posterolateral head scales, dorsum of head pale yellow with distinct darkish markings, 35–39 transverse dorsal scale rows, lateralmost row of ventral scales enlarged relative to adjoining medial row, and dorsum brown with darker crossbands which can be typically diminished to rows of spots.”
The researchers have provisionally positioned Abronia cunemica sp. nov within the subgenus Lissabronia. They base this on genomic and morphological proof. In addition they counsel the species has a detailed relationship with the Abaculabronia subgenus. The Central Melancholy of Chiapas geographically separates the species from these within the Lissabronia and Abaculabronia subgenus.
Male Southern Alligator Lizards Clamp The Heads Of Their Mates For Hours Throughout Courtship
New Alligator Lizard Species Found And Described
The researchers carried out a number of years of fieldwork within the Northern Highlands of Chiapas, investing 350 search hours and capturing 5 lizards that the researchers believed to be a brand new species of arboreal alligator lizard. They then ran genetic testing in opposition to different Abronia species within the clade and decided that the lizard was a species new to science.
The male lizards have a snout to vent size of 127mm, with the feminine paratype having a 113 mm SVL. The physique is a medium brown mixing to a pale yellow on the lateral nuchals and “boring lemon yellow with brown flecks on the flanks.” The forelimbs and hindlimb are rusty brown with darkish brown flecking and blotching. The tail is similar coloration because the physique. The lizards have been discovered 3.5 to 19.5 meters excessive on tree limbs of Pinus chiapensis bushes. in addition they discovered a mating pair on the forest ground that the researchers presumed fell through the courtship chunk maintain that this species is thought for.
