New Species of Gecko with ‘Psychedelic Eyes’ Recognized in Australia

Researchers have described a cryptic new species within the spiny-tailed gecko genus Strophurus from inland areas of southern Western Australia.

Strophurus is a genus of lizards in Diplodactylidae, a household within the suborder Gekkota.

The genus accommodates round 20 acknowledged species, all endemic to Australia.

Often known as spiny-tailed or striped geckos, they’re small, nocturnal reptiles, with a size between 3.5 to 9 cm (1.4-3.5 inches).

All Strophurus species have a novel protection mechanism — they possess a sequence of caudal glands that they use in stress conditions, secreting a innocent, foul-smelling fluid when contracting the tail musculature. This fluid is used to discourage birds whereas they’re perching in shrubbery.

They have a tendency to have small spines or tubercles, particularly on the tail.

A number of species have small however distinct spines above their very engaging eyes.

“We current an sudden discovery of a cryptic species beforehand assigned to Strophurus assimilis in the midst of a broadscale survey of genetic variation within the genus,” mentioned Dr. Ross Sadlier from the Australian Museum Analysis Institute and colleagues.

Named Strophurus spinula (frequent title is the lesser thorn-tailed gecko), the brand new species has a size of 6.1 cm (2.4 inches).

“It may be distinguished from different members of the genus by a mix of a number of characters reminiscent of a comparatively straight and discontinuous row of enlarged unicolored tubercles alongside the dorsolateral margin of the physique; and a tail with a single row of enlarged unicolored spines on both aspect of the unique tail,” the scientists mentioned.

Strophurus spinula is discovered largely inside the southern woodlands area of Western Australia.

“Many of the distribution of Strophurus spinula lies inside the southern a part of the mulga (Acacia aneura) woodlands of Western Australia, extending peripherally into adjoining vegetation sorts within the south of its vary,” the authors mentioned.

“Its distribution broadly overlaps with Strophurus strophurus, although the latter is extra widespread, and to a lesser extent within the east of its vary with Strophurus wellingtonae.”

The invention is reported in a paper within the Information of the Western Australian Museum.
