SeaWorld Orlando welcomed a uncommon Pacific walrus calf into its care earlier this month. The calf was discovered orphaned and deserted on the seashores of Utqiagvik, Alaska. The Alaska SeaLife Heart (ASLC) offered rehabilitative care to the calf, named Ukiaq – or Uki (pronounced “oo-kee”) for brief.
After america Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) assessed her scenario, they determined Uki wouldn’t survive in the event that they launched her again into the wild. Fortuitously, SeaWorld Orlando stepped in to supply a endlessly house.
At SeaWorld Orlando, Uki will obtain professional care from workers behind the scenes. Then, as soon as she’s prepared, Uki will be a part of the opposite walruses within the herd.
Dr. Joseph Gaspard, Vice President of Zoological Operations at SeaWorld Orlando, remarked on the collaborative nature of Uki’s rescue:
“From the Utqiagvik neighborhood members who first discovered her, to the tireless efforts of the ASLC group, and now to our household right here at SeaWorld Orlando, Uki has been surrounded by folks dedicated to giving her a second likelihood.”
