A teen has died after a suspected crocodile assault off an island within the Torres Strait, police have confirmed.
Thursday Island water police launched a search and rescue operation close to Saibai Island after receiving reviews at about 4am on Thursday {that a} 16-year-old boy was lacking.
{The teenager}, and a 13-year-old boy, reportedly tried to swim again to shore from a damaged down dinghy, Queensland police mentioned.
On Thursday night time a spokesperson confirmed that they’d found the physique of the older boy.
They’ve since confirmed that he had accidents “in step with a crocodile assault”.
The formal identification course of has begun to substantiate the identification of the physique, and additional testing is below technique to verify the reason for dying.
A spokesperson for Queensland’s Division of Setting, Science and Innovation mentioned wildlife officers will now survey the waters off Saibai Island with a purpose to try and find the crocodile concerned.
“The area people has requested the animal concerned within the incident be faraway from the wild,” the division spokesperson mentioned.
The crocodile suspected to be concerned within the assault is estimated to be about 3.5 metres in size.
