July and early August are essentially the most tedious occasions for chook watching in Korea, when birds are principally hidden in forests or rice paddies, not very vocal and energetic, the warmth is scorching and the humidity overwhelming. All this was true, yesterday, too. However, whereas on my solution to an ideal workshop on the way forward for the biosphere reserve in Yeoncheon with Yeoncheon county, Birds Korea, and consultants from throughout Korea and from College of California, Berkeley, I finished at some locations to take a look at birds and habitats. The destruction of habitat in Paju round Gongneungchon stream sadly is ongoing and, I worry, irreversible, although there are nonetheless some beautiful patches right here and there. Yesterday, to my shock I didn’t see any Black-faced Spoonbill, often a positive discover within the space. The best discover was a Crested Honey Buzzard circling slowly over Gunnam dam in Yeoncheon and calling out. Because of Nial Moores for assist with the ID!
