Uranus was not universally recognised as a planet – the seventh within the Photo voltaic System – till March, 1781, regardless of having been noticed way back to 128 BC. The British astronomer William Herschel initially thought he had found a brand new comet, based mostly on the motion of the thing towards the background of stars: this parallax movement is clear within the images under that I took six nights aside. (Since Uranus is round 1.8 billion miles away, the obvious motion is sort of small – however seen!)
The god of the skies!
It took practically seventy years for a reputation to be usually agreed upon : the German astronomer Bode advised calling the planet Uranus – the latinized model of the title of Greek god of the skies, Ouaranos.
